GETTING THINGS DONE for Shiawassee County
Improved county finances which were on the brink just a few years ago...
-
Pension fund balance improved from 62% funded to 89% funded.
-
Ended the defined benefit pension system for new hires to a defined contribution system that will result in massive savings in coming years.
-
Made changes to employee Health Insurance delivery that is saving about $1,000,000 yearly with no reductions in benefits.
-
Fiscal controls and careful budgeting have increased the county fund balance from 4% to 16%. State minimum is 10%!
-
Annual audit, which was chronically late in the past, has been on time and gone from 12 material weaknesses and under state review reported to zero!
-
$6.5 million renovation of historic courthouse using Federal dollars–should be good for at least 30 years.
-
Enacted pretrial services program and reconstituted Community Corrections Advisory Board for alternatives to incarceration.
Land Bank:
One of my stated goals when I first ran for office. I pushed for its creation and now we are building housing and cleaning up the county one blighted building at a time.
-
Two new housing developments in Owosso with more countywide in the planning stages.
-
Demolition of the Days Inn just outside of Owosso, a dilapidated cold storage building in a neighborhood on Robbins St. in Owosso, the old Simplicity Factory in Durand, and derelict buildings in downtown Lennon.
